Early stimulation in Panama: what to do in the first 3 years
The first 3 years of life are the most important window of brain development. A practical guide for first time parents.
A child brain grows three times faster in the first 3 years than at any other stage of life. What a baby does or does not do in that window shapes their motor, cognitive, and language development.
What is early stimulation
It is a set of activities and games designed to boost the child development by age. It is not skipping stages or pressuring the baby. It is giving the right stimuli so the brain grows healthy.
What each age needs
**0 to 6 months:** skin to skin contact, constant talking, showing high contrast objects, singing, awake tummy time.
**6 to 12 months:** hand play (grab, release, transfer), fabric book reading, floor crawling, hearing clear repeated words.
**12 to 24 months:** shape sorters, block towers, walking, constant descriptive language, songs with gestures.
**2 to 3 years:** pretend play (cooking, healing, dress up), scribbling, cutting with safety scissors, stories with simple questions.
When to see a specialist
Not all babies develop at the same pace, but there are red flags to watch:
- No head control by 4 months
- Not sitting alone by 9 months
- No clear words by 18 months
- Not walking alone by 18 months
- No two word phrases by 2 years
- Loss of previously acquired skills
Early stimulation is not just for delays
Many first time parents come to learn how to safely stimulate their baby. It is an investment in development that pays off for decades. At Villarreal Clinic I offer initial evaluation and sessions adapted to each child, plus clear guidance to continue at home.
**The early years do not come back.** Make them count.
